 Test Scope 

Grade 5 First Semester 

Midterm English Exam 

English Exam

Date: Thursday, 24th October, Periods 1 & 2

40% Grammar:

Review Resources - For the grammar section of the test, students should review their Grammar quizzes, review worksheets and Enter the World of Grammar 2 textbook. The areas to be tested are:

1. Unit 1: Present Simple and Present Progressive p.4-10 

2. Unit 2 Future “Will” and “Be Going to” p.11-17 

3. Unit 3 Past Simple and Past Progressive p.18-24

4. Unit 4 Comparison of Adjectives p.25-39

20% Creative Writing:

Students must write a 3-4 paragraph descriptive or persuasive text. They will be given 2 topics to choose from. The introduction must include a hook and a thesis statement, and the body of the essay must include reasons and descriptions relating to the text and examples supporting the author’s point of view. The essay will be graded according to content, organization, grammar and creativity. (Students must not go over the word limit)  

30% Reading:

Students will read a short passage and answer questions based on the text. Students will be graded on comprehension skills, spelling and grammar. 

Students will also be tested on their Soft Cover Journey’s book; Lesson 1: An Ocean Learner, Lesson 3: Tomas Decides, Lesson 5: It Takes Teamwork, and Lesson 6 Will the American Chestnut Survive? Short questions will be based on these texts. 

10% Vocabulary: 

Review Resource: Vocabulary Quizzes / Language Handbook L1, L3, L5, and L6.

Students will be tested on a selection of vocabulary words taught from L1, L3, L5, and L6. A word bank will be provided from which students choose a suitable word to complete sentences. 

Science and Math Exam

Date: Friday, 25th October, Periods 1 and 2

1. Unit 1 The Respiratory System p.1-14

2. Unit 2 The Circulatory System p.15-26

3. Unit 3 Diseases and Injuries p.27-38

Students will have to identify parts of the respiratory system and circulatory system, and diseases and injuries based on the textbook. They will also be required to complete sentences with vocabulary provided in word banks.
