Overview of Week 5

 Hi parents,

This week for reading we read about a girl who had to work with a classmate that she didn't know for a school project. It was about teamwork and how you should try working with other people, not just your friends.

For math, we completed the lesson on word problems. This will probably be the part they struggle with most on the test. They have to read and understand before they can start doing arithmetic.

For science, we finished the self-check for circulatory system.

For grammar, we finished the past simple vs past progressive Ch 3. There wasn't a quiz on it this week, since the week was so short.

They all have review worksheet to do for HW.

Peace

Mr. Richard

Overview of week 4

 Hi parents!

For reading in 501 class, we read about students learning Double Dutch, a jump rope style. We watched a video at the end, so they could see what they just read. For reading in 502 class, we read about a girl who contemplated joining the singing club. She was unsure of herself at first, but with her dad's encouragement she eventually triumphed.

For science, we finished the self check for respiratory system. We started on the circulatory system and we will be finishing it on Saturday.

For math, we worked on order of operations. They learned about PEMDAS and working from left to right.

For grammar, we just had a grammar quiz on Future will and Future be going to. They didn't have any issues.

For creative writing, we wrote an essay on Double Ten Day. This was mandated by the school and they struggled a lot with this topic.

Congrats to Shih Chi for being Lih Jen Angel this week and good job Rory for introducing him.

Thanks

Mr. Richard

Week 3 Overview

 Hi parents!

Creative writing - This week we wrote a formal letter to our favorite companies. We learned how a formal letter is supposed to be written. They thought this CW was interesting, but a bit difficult.

Math- We finished with factors and completed multiples. This was very easy for them as they are learning or have already learned it in Chinese math. We will be doing order of operations next week.

Science- We finished with our respiratory system self check and started on the circulatory system. we will be spending the next 3 weeks on this.

Grammar- We are review Future going to and will. This is just reviewing so it is rather easy for them to understand. We will have a grammar quiz on this next week.

Reading - We read a story about Tomas and his dilemma. He wasn't sure whether to play baseball or be the school president.

Peace out!

Week 2 Overview

 Hi parents

Creative writing- This week we wrote about our summer vacation. I showed them the structure for a good essay and introduced the concept of a exciting hook.

Grammar- We had our grammar quiz this week on present simple vs present progressive. Since this was their first grammar exam we made it quite simple. I'm pretty sure there were no surprises for the students.

Math- we finished with approximation and estimation. We started with factors, which was quite easy for them. They probably learned this in Chinese math. Next week, we will be doing multiples. It will be a cake walk.

Reading - 501 Our story this week was about girls at a camp, and one of the campers turned out to be a princess.

502- Journeys this week was about two boys going to a  baseball game. The boys forgot the tickets and had to find a way to sneak in.

Science- We finished with the respiratory system this week. We will finish the self check next week and start the circulatory system.

Week 1 Overview

 Hi Parents,

Please make sure that ALL BOOKS except the novel book and language handbook are covered. This is extremely important. Also please bring in a pack of tissues for English class if you haven't already done so.

Grammar- We started with lesson 1 on the present progressive vs present simple. They said they learned this in 4th grade already so we are just adding a little bit more in 5th grade. They seem to be having no issues with it. There will be a grammar quiz next Friday.

Math- We started estimation and approximation. I reviewed with them the name of each digits place before we started learning how to round.

Science - We started with respiratory system. We discussed about the nose, windpipe, air tubes and air sacs.

Reading - We read softcover Journeys this week about a boy going to school at sea and how he was reluctant at first. Eventually he realizes school at sea isn't so bad because of new friends and interesting things.

Peace out

Mr. Richard
